Commercial and industrial carpenters construct, erect, install and repair structures and fixtures. Primary Tasks:

  • Study blueprints, sketches, or building plans to prepare project layout and determine dimensions and materials required.
  • Measure and mark cutting lines on materials, using a ruler, pencil, chalk, and marking gauge.
  • Shape or cut materials to specified measurements, using hand tools, machines, or power saws.
  • Verify trueness of structure, using plumb bob and level.
  • Install structures or fixtures, such as windows, frames, floorings, trim, or hardware, using carpenters’ hand or power tools.

Training

Training available through our local apprenticeship training facility (Pacific Northwest Carpenters Institute at the Tangent Training Center). This training prepares them for careers as a carpenter and other related occupations: Carpentry Specialist, Framer, Construction Worker, Drywall/Finisher, and Cabinetmaker/Furniture Maker.

High School/College Courses:

Apprenticeship through Pacific Northwest Carpenters Institute:

ELIGIBILITY: Minimum qualifications for applicants are: Seventeen (17) years of age and have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent OR Eighteen (18) years of age.

LENGTH OF TIME: A carpenter apprenticeship lasts four years. Apprentices complete a minimum of 144 hours/year of classroom training and 8,000 hours of on-the-job training.

COST: You earn while you learn, and you are paid a wage from the first day you become a working apprentice. Some costs however may apply – please contact PNCI for more information.
