Heavy Equipment Operators use machinery to move construction materials, earth, and other heavy materials at construction sites. They operate equipment that clears and grades land to prepare it for construction of roads, buildings, and bridges, as well as airport runways, power generation facilities, dams, levees, and other structures. Operation is more technologically advanced than it was in the past and requires skilled training.

Training

The typical entry-level education for this occupation is a high school diploma or equivalent. Those who enter into an apprenticeship have a competitive advantage and will earn higher wages.

Apprenticeship:

Apprenticeship and training is available through the Northwest College of Construction in Portland. The construction industry pays for your tuition and books. Apprentices receive a paycheck, hands-on career training in the craft of their choice, a free education, and upon completion, apprentices receive nationally recognized industry certification as a master craftsperson (Journeyman).

The first thing that the college does for applicants to the apprenticeship program is to place them in a job with a construction contractor.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Apprenticeship applicants must be at least 18 years of age and must provide proof of a HS Diploma or GED.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Provide proof of at least 18 years of age.
  • Submit documentaton for points for ranking placement.
  • Points are awarded for: valid drivers license, military, education, certifications, work experience documented on company letterhead and completion of BOLI approved pre-apprenticeship.
  • Attend 1/2 day of orientation and 2 days of jumpstart.

LENGTH OF APPRENTICESHIP:

Classroom Hours: A minimum of 160 hours per year for 4 years On-the-Job Training: 8,000 hours (approx. 4 years).
