Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) technicians are always piercing things together as they install, maintain, and repair systems. Can’t decide between a career in mechanical systems or electronics? HVAC covers it all! Motors, compressors, pumps, fans, thermostats, and computerized switches control systems in residential, commercial, and industrial structures. Technicians can also specialize in specific equipment such as hydronics (water-based heating systems), solar panels, or commercial refrigeration.

Training

HVAC is a registered apprenticeship program. The Mid-Valley HVAC/R JAT Committee, MA #2026, contracts with Chemeketa to administer the HVAC/R program and provide courses. For other programs in Oregon, visit www.oregon.gov/boli/ATD/pages/a_ctrades_hvaccont.aspx.

Apprenticeship:

This is a four-year program that combines 8,000 hours of on-the-job training with concurrent related-training credit courses two nights a week (currently Wednesday and Thursday). Apprentices earn 15 academic credits a year.

How to apply:

The HVAC/R Committee is normally open for applications in the spring and summer, based on industry need. Openings are announced for 30 days before applications are accepted. Classes begin in the fall. First-year classes are open to the public. To apply, call 503-399-5255 or apprenticeship@chemeketa.edu to be added to the waiting list to receive opening notifications.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of one year of high school algebra with a grade of ‘C’ or better or placement into Math 70 or higher on Chemeketa’s Placement Test.
  • High school math equivalent is Math 60 and Math 70 taken at Chemeketa Community College.
  • At least 18 years of age.
